30. WILLIAM HIXON WOODWARD

FROM INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN A TRUCK WRECK ON LESLIE MT., LESLIE, ARKANSAS.
He was buried on 30 Jan 1960 in CRESTLAWN CEMETERY, CONWAY, ARKANSAS. Seaman
1 - c William Hixon Woodward of Route 4 Conway, Arkansas was in the crew of one
of the first ships to carry occupation troops to Japan. His ship, the USS Talladega,
an attack transport, was in the "Tokyo force" and carried units of
the First Cavalry division.
Woodward said in a letter to his parents: The troops, with their equipment,
were landed September 2 ( tokyo time) at a dock at Yokahama. It was on the day
surrender terms were signed on the USS Missouri, anchored nearby. The Talladego
reached Tokyo Bay shortly before the formal surrender, and was the first ship
to dock of the 31 transports in its convoy.
The Talladego, named after a county in Alabama, was commissioned november
1, 1944 at San Francisco and carried a unit of the Fifth division of Marines
to Iwo Jima, reaching that island 750 miles from Japan on D-Day, Feburary 19.
Less than two months later it took elements of the 27th army division to okinawa.
Just before going to Japan, the ship was in the Phillippines for three months
where it was used part of the time for training army troops in amphibious warfare
preparatory to the planned assault on Japan which was made unnecessary by the
ending of the war.
As a result of the activities of his ship, oodward won the right to wear
campaign ribbons for the American and the Asiatic-Pacific theaters (the latter
with two bronze battle stars) and the Philippine liberation ribbon. Woodward
had been in the navy 17 months. woodward had been on the USS Talladega since
it was commissioned.
